Great Chilton Field Centre is a non-profit making organisation, offering a first class educational experience for children of pre-school and primary age groups. Located in the heart of County Durham, but with excellent access for the whole region, we are open to groups from 1st March to 31st October.

We can tailor your visit to suit the class topic, fulfilling Attainment Targets in Science, English, Maths, Design & Technology, History and Geography.

Themed visits can include:
Come to Your Senses - Discovering the environment through a range of activities based on sight, smell, touch and hearing.
Watch it Move! - Go pond-dipping and mini-beast hunting. Learn to handle small animals with care and make careful observations.
Be a Detective! - As nature detectives the children use tracks, trails and signs to discover the wildlife of Great Chilton Farm. As history detectives they spot clues to its past
Creative Mapwork! - Learn map reading and the use of a compass. Make mini-maps and an Adventure Trail.
Seeing the Wood for the Trees! - How does a tree grow? How old is it? What patterns can you find? What lives in trees?
Eat or be Eaten! - Discover the food chain, predator-prey relations and recycling through pond study and the food web game
Seasonal Changes - We encourage schools to visit Great Chilton at different times of the year to discover Nature “on the move.” Spring themes include birds, eggs and nests, colour and song. Autumn themes could be fruits and seeds, fungi and leaf fall.

We welcome a preparatory visit from teachers, when we will be happy to plan a day’s activities designed to meet your own requirements, and to suggest suitable preparation and follow-up work.

We provide all the necessary equipment for the day.
