About the Centre
The present Great Chilton Farm dates back to the early 1600's, but there has been a settlement here long before then. No longer a working farm, it is now a carefully managed site with an abundance of wildlife.

The six acre site comprises two large ponds which wind round tree-lined banks,
with safe platforms from which to dip. There are two kinds of woodland: a dense conifer copse and a naturally developed wet woodland, with young willow, ash and alder. There is an area suitable for mini-beast hunting under logs and stones, and a large orchard suitable for environmental drama, and picnics on dry days.
Your guide throughout your visit, Charles Henniker-Major. has over 10 years experience in field study, having qualified at Thornham Field Centre in Suffolk.
Open since 1989, the centre has welcomed children from schools and organisations from all areas of the North-East, in particular those from the Durham Education Authority. We have seen visitor numbers exceed 2000 in one year alone. The centre provides children with an unrivalled experience, meeting the highest of standards, at a price unrivalled by any other local organisation.
